sutro baths

In chapter 25, Abby and Jake visit the Sutro Baths. If you’re familiar with San Francisco’s Ocean Beach, you’re probably familiar with the Sutro ruins, located at the north end of Ocean Beach. And if you’ve visited the city and stopped at the famous diner, Louis’, to have a burger and milkshake with an unbeatable view of Seal Rocks and the Marin Headlands, then you’ve dined just above the baths.

At the end of the 19th century, Sutro Baths was a grand affair, home to the world’s largest indoor swimming pool.  The baths had a couple of incarnations before its destruction by fire in 1966. Fortunately, bids to build on the location have been denied, and the baths represent to me San Francisco’s beauty–wild and dangerous and scruffy, a city on the edge of the continent.
